Popped into a Pop-up Brunch!
The long-awaited second post in the brunch series has finally arrived! The reason for the long wait was due to the struggle of choosing between all the restaurants I’ve eaten at. Fortunately, I had an awesome experience a few months ago that gave me the inspiration to finally write the next post, so here we go!
While at work one Saturday, I saw a friend had tagged me on a recent Instagram post from Ocmulgee Brewpub. I clicked on the post and cancelled all my plans to lay in bed that Sunday because I HAD to be at the one time pop-up brunch they were advertising. From the looks of the small brunch menu, I could tell it was gonna be an opportunity I couldn’t miss out on.
If you’re a native of my hometown, Macon, Ga., then you must be familiar with my all-time favorite eatery, Ocmulgee Brewpub. At least you should be. For those who don’t know why Brewpub is one of the great wonders of Macon, let me explain why.
Brewpub is one of those places where you can bring anyone, no matter what race, age, or background, and always have a good time. As posted on their website, “The best of Macon will ‘boil up’ around our tables and taps.” I’d say this is achieved as I’ve had many good times laughing and eating amazing food with friends, family, dates, and an assortment of others. The fast-casual nature of the establishment with its long, commune style tables and easy-going atmosphere makes this a unique place to eat out.
The menu can be described as southern gourmet food, with staples like fried pickles, pork skins, onion rings, green tomatoes, and cheese curds. (The onion rings are sooo good and one of my favorite sides, highly recommend). Their gourmet burgers are in my opinion the best in town ( I stand by that statement no matter what). All of their sauces are house-made and are so good that you will want to take a whole container of them home. I’d personally take gallons of the truffle aioli home anyday.
Mid-afternoon one Sunday, my friends and I walked into Brewpub and picked up a brunch menu at the door. We looked over the menu a few minutes and as Latoya once said, “I’m toooorn in between the twooo”, I was also torn between getting the Candied Pecan Beer Pancakes and the Steak and Eggs Bowl. To help with the decision making I decided to get both and share them with the rest of the table. The pricing was great which helped with that decision as the pancakes were only $6 and the Steak and Eggs Bowl only $12. Essentially, it was like getting the steak and eggs bowl as my entree and pancakes on the side.
Since everyone at the table got the Beer-mosa, I also had to give it a try. We were a little skeptical of how it would taste, but it turned out to be one of my favorite drinks so far. The syrups mixed together made it a light, citrusy and sweet beer. Precisely my type of drink.
Our food was brought out insanely fast, I mean we had barely sat down when plates were being sat in front of us. Since we all got something different, I’m able to give a review of pretty much the whole menu! Starting off, I give the Candied Pecan Beer Pancakes a 10/10 because they were perfectly cooked, no crumbling, and I love pecans. The beer flavor was a bit noticeable, but not overwhelming so I still enjoyed it.
I liked the Steak and Eggs Bowl, but it could have used some sauce or something else to make it a little less dry. However, I loved the crunchy tater tots topped with the sunny side up egg.
One of my friends had the Shrimp and Grits which I did try a few spoonfuls of, even though I’m not a fan of shrimp. I will say the grits were very tasty, and we all enjoyed them.
Last but not least, I did not try the Breakfast Club Burger that one of my friends ordered, but they did both attest that it was amazing. It was a juicy burger sandwiched between French toast which looked mouth-watering and is a genius conception. If you know me, I love anything involving French Toast.
Eating at Ocmulgee Brewpub is always a good time, but I especially enjoyed this unique experience trying nearly an entire brunch menu. It may have been a one-time brunch, but it definitely goes down in my book as one of my all-time favorites. I give their brunch a 10/10 because of the planning, thoughtfulness, and flavor of every dish. If you missed out I’m incredibly sorry, but hopefully they’ll do another one in the future that you guys can catch. It’s a must try! Follow their Instagram to keep up with future events, menu updates, and mouth-watering meals!
